Topic:
Statistical Mechanics far from thermal equilibrium – Theoretical study of wetting phenomena
Summary:
The goal of the project is to construct and analyze theoretical models for wetting far from thermal equilibrium and to verify them with respect to possible experimental applications. As a key question it will be investigated to what extent the breaking of detailed balance leads to new physical phenomena and in which experimental situations these phenomena can be observed. To this end it is intended to modify existing models in such a way that the underlying stochastic deposition and desorption processes mimic those observed in experiments as much as possible. Moreover, the project shall answer the question how impurities and irregularities of the substrate influence the properties of the wetting layer under non-equilibrium conditions. Similarly, wetting layers on artificially structured
substrates will be investigated.
Experience of the candidates required in:
• Theoretical physics, in particular statistical mechanics
• Computer simulations
The candidates should be especially interested in:
• Surface growth phenomena
• Interaction between theory and experiment
Educational background required:
• Master thesis (or diploma) on theoretical statistical physics.
