"Theory-building for quantum critical metals: a progress report"
Date: 09/02/2024, 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Category: Kolloquium
Location: Hubland Süd, Geb. P1 (Physik), SE1
Organizer: SFB 1170 ToCoTronics
Speaker: Chris Hooley - MPI Dresden/Coventry University

Observations of unusual metallic behaviour in the vicinity of quantum critical points are now numerous, and many are by now decades old.  The traditional theory of such phenomena, Hertz-Millis-Moriya theory, turns out to have problems, and in the past ten years there has been a surge of efforts to build more complete and consistent theories along newer lines.  In this talk, I shall explain what makes this problem difficult, and give an overview of the work in my group [1-4] - past and present - to try and improve our understanding of these unusual phases of quantum matter.
