"Creating quantum states of matter atom-by-atom on a semiconductor"

Advances in low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and atomic-scale manipulation enabled the atom-by-atom creation and characterization of quantum states of matter [1]. In recent years, various artificial lattices have been created to emulate the band structure of Dirac, topological, and strongly correlated materials [2-4]. Nevertheless, previous studies mostly relied on using bulk metallic substrates, where the delocalized electrons strongly interact with the patterned atomic lattice, leading to unwanted screening and hybridization effects. In this talk, I will show a new strategy, emulating complex artificial molecular orbitals, based on positioning individual cesium atoms on the surface of semiconducting indium antimonide [5]. This work provides a superior platform for in-depth exploration of the topological phase and many-body physics in the designed lattices.
