Würzburg ToCoTronics Colloquium

"Imaging spin textures of novel quantum materials using spin-polarized ARPES"
Date: 05/05/2022, 4:15 PM - 6:00 PM
Category: Kolloquium
Location: Hubland Süd, Geb. P1 (Physik), HS P
Organizer: SFB 1170 ToCoTronics
Speaker: Lukasz Plucinski - FZ Jülich

We will discuss spin-polarized and circular dichroic ARPES maps from several quantum materials such as WTe2, PtTe2, WSe2, and Bi2Te3. We will show that, as long as the mirror plane exists and is not broken by the experimental geometry, these maps exhibit symmetries that follow the axial vector mirror rules. The goal of this research is to contribute to the giant task of establishing a connection between ARPES spin- and orbital-texture mapping and initial state occupied band structure, that determines intrinsic transport properties.

This research has been possible through the recent technical developments in spin-ARPES with the use of exchange-scattering spin detectors. We will introduce two such systems: the lab based system in Juelich that uses a 6eV laser and the newly-commissioned synchrotron-based system at the PHELIX beamline at the Solaris synchrotron source in Krakow. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using the tandem of a hemispherical analyzer/exchange-scattering detector as compared to other designs.
