The increasing interest in quantum technologies puts tailor-made quantum materials into the focus. In this context, the term ‘material’ is more and more understood in a wider sense to also include designer structures beyond a single crystalline phase. For example, such structures can be surface-supported nanostructures made by placing atoms or molecules one by one, or arbitrarily stacked 2D materials. The vision of this approach is the ultimate freedom of designing quantum matter. In my talk will give an overview over recent work of the Quantum Nanoscience Institute in Jülich in this direction, comprising van der Waals heterostructures, molecule-by-molecule fabrication, and nanoscale transport experiments.
