Als ehemaliger Diplomand und Doktorand am Lehrstuhl Experimentelle Physik III in Würzburg hat mich die Nachricht vom Tod dieses wunderbaren Menschen tief berührt. Seine einmalige positive Wesensart und seine Leistungen als Wissenschaftler lassen sich wohl kaum in Worte fassen. Seit meiner Zeit in Würzburg bis jetzt als Mitarbeiter eines Unternehmens mit II-VI-Halbleiterfertigung bin ich täglich mit dem Wirken dieses Menschen verbunden. Unsere Anteilnahme und unser Mitgefühl, die ich auch im Namen der Firma AIM aussprechen möchte, gilt seiner Familie, seinen Angehörigen, seinen Freunden und seinen Kollegen, die einen außerordentlich wundervollen Menschen verloren haben.

Dear colleagues,
The sad news that came from Würzburg in the end of January pierced to the heart numerous colleagues and friends of Gottfried Landwehr in Saint-Petersburg. A great scientist and facilitator of science, an outstanding teacher and mentor for young physicists, a beautiful person passed away.
The works by Professor Landwehr are recognized to have contributed to shape the key areas of semiconductor physics such as the research into semiconductor properties in intense magnetic fields, the technology of growth and optical properties of heterostructures based on А2В6 wide-band-gap semiconductors. We are well aware of Professor Landwehr’s role in the establishment of new German research centers that work in the most pertinent areas of solid state physics as are we aware of numerous Landwehr’s students including those who already are and those who are to be leading world physicists.
Of special note is Professor Landwehr’s huge contribution to the development of international cooperation between Russian and German scientists. The physicists of Saint-Petersburg greatly appreciate their longstanding cooperation with Landwehr’s laboratory in Würzburg. 20 years ago, in 1993, Landwehr was elected an Honorable Member of the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute by the Russian Academy of Sciences. Landwehr’s laboratory has close scientific ties with various laboratories of this large Institute and carries out collaborative research into the optical properties of wide-band-gap semiconductor heterostructures, particularly in connection with the issues of green laser diodes, the properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors and others. This collaboration has resulted not only in a series of remarkable findings, but also in the emergence of a whole lot of new names of gifted young physicists.
In August 2009, during the celebration of Gottfried Landwehr’s 80th anniversary we were happy, here in Saint-Petersburg, to extend our love and respect to him at the 14th International А2В6 Semiconductors Conference. Future development of collaboration between Saint-Petersburg and Würzburg will be our ultimate tribute to the memory of Professor Landwehr, an eminent scientist and person.
