CryoMag

The CryoMag is a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is eqipped with a dry superconducting split-coil magnet which supplies a magnetic field up to 3 T.  The cryostat includes an air-damping system which isolates the helium dewar from mechanical and acoustic vibrations.  Tip and sample are held at a temperature of 5 K.  The ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system consists of a preparation chamber and an analysis chamber.

The CryoMag is used for investigations of nanomagnetic samples.  By using magnetically coated probe tips spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) measurements are performed with atomic resolution, i.e., we are able to image the magnetic orientation of surface atoms individually.
