In the absence of low-energy supersymmetry, the classical description of near-extremal black holes in four dimensions breaks down as the temperature approaches zero. In this talk, I will review recent approaches to calculating logarithmic temperature quantum corrections to the thermodynamics of these black holes. Drawing on both four-dimensional and two-dimensional techniques, these methods remedy the breakdown of the classical framework. Particular focus will be given to results for a Lifshitz-like black hole that arises in the near-horizon geometry of a specific string-theoretic configuration, as well as ongoing work on black holes in de Sitter spacetime.
