LT-2

The LT-2 was our second low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM), but the first which was designed and built in-house within a master project.  Its operation temperature is 5 Kelvin.   The LT-2 is housed in a two-chamber ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system with seprate chambers for tip and sample preparation and STM imaging (see gallery images below). 

This system is usually used for the investigation of correlation effects, i.e. emergent electronic properties caused by the interaction between electrons host-impurity systems, such as molecules on surfaces.  One prominent example is the Kondo effect of transition metal phthalocyanine (Pc) molecules on noble metal surfaces, which we have studied extensively (see following links for images and publications).
