In the last decade, new techniques in epitaxy have enabled separation of the grown thin film from the growth substrate, resulting in freestanding oxide membranes. These membranes have brought the worlds of thin films and 2D materials closer and have empowered experimental explorations in the sub-100 nm thin films which were previously inaccessible due to constraints of the film being bound on the substrate. In this talk I will discuss these new possibilities, our contributions to it and where the field promises to lead us in the future. Through this, I hope to convey how these developments in oxides promise new paths for not only fundamental physics studies but also for practical applications such as flexible electronics, material heterointegration and NEMS/MEMS.
